Bicyclist Dies Following 'Road Rage' Shooting In Taylor
TAYLOR (WWJ/AP) - Police in Taylor say a bicyclist who caused a traffic accident was fatally shot by a motorist in an apparent case of road rage.
Police say the bicyclist died during surgery following the Wednesday night shooting, and the 46-year-old motorist from Taylor was taken into custody.
According to police, the driver was traveling northbound on Telegraph, turning eastbound onto Northline around 6:30 p.m., when the bicyclist disregarded a "Do Not Cross" and crossed into his path, causing a collision.
Witnesses allegedly told police the bicyclist went for the driver after being struck, repeatedly punching him through the vehicle's window. Police say the driver stayed in his car, but at some point during the altercation he pulled out a pistol and fired one round at the victim, striking him in the chest.
Police say the driver, who had a gun permit, called 911 and remained in his car at the scene. He was then taken into custody when officers arrived.
The victim is described as a white male, possibly in his late 30's to early 40's, tall and thin, with graying hair. The bicycle he had been riding was a yellow 10-speed bicycle.
The motorist was being held pending possible charges from prosecutors.
