There are a variety of classes available that specialize in working in a range of different mediums. Some studios teach ceramics and painting while others focus on design and architecture. A local theatre offers classes that teach children the art of puppetry. The Museum Of Contemporary Art Detroit is a contemporary exhibition space and art museum that hosts families on the third Sunday of every month. Each session is unique in theme, and projects vary accordingly. This is a great way to get children thinking about and interacting with art in a comfortable setting. Guest speakers and artists guide some classes, while others are more focused on self-guided exploration and discovery. There is always someone there to help, if needed, and it is a cool place to bring the family where everyone can create together. 555 Gallery is a gallery space and artist studio located in a former police precinct. What kid wouldn't think that was awesome? One Saturday each month, the 555 Gallery holds art classes for children from ages seven to 14. Art Club is taught by talented instructors who are involved in the arts themselves. Projects vary each month and have included creating, painting and firing a clay piece, printmaking, metal stamping, cartooning and masks. Imaginations will run wild in this class, which is exactly how it should be. Please call ahead to reserve a space for each child attending.

There are also art camps that are scheduled throughout the year, which introduce kids to a little bit of everything. For a supreme amount of fun, register for a class where students are taught to throw on the wheel and hand build a clay piece. Would your future Rembrandt prefer painting? No problem. Talented instructors will teach kids painting techniques. The studio offers painting on canvas, so children will leave with a finished piece of art that they created.
