Best DIY Pottery In Detroit

Pottery Creations can be found off of Biddle, between Eureka and Oak Street, in Wyandotte, and is open every day except Monday. The shop offers you the chance to create pottery, glass fusion or mosaics; the cost is $8 for adults, $5 for kids (studio fee) plus the price of the pottery itself. There's also a "pottery to go" program which works best for large groups, and Pottery Creations can also host birthday parties, school and scout field trips and summer camps at its location.

Sugar Hill Clay is located in Midtown (downtown Detroit) and its goal is to "[promote] access to the ceramic arts through educational programming and professional workshops." If you're already an experienced artist, you can check out its monthly membership, which will permit you to use the studio independently. Classes usually meet once a week, and you pay for the entire session; mold and slip-casting classes are currently six weeks long, whereas throwing classes last eight weeks. There are also one and two-day workshops you can attend.

Pewabic Pottery is a non-profit studio located downtown, and it has many classes, especially for kids. Check out the Saturday youth workshops or the youth camps. Or if you're an adult, Pewabic has various workshops for you as well. The store also sells memberships with varying benefits, but every level receives opportunities to get up to 20 percent off in the store during April and September; a members-only summer sale, with up to 50 percent off; early class registration and discounts for most purchases at the store and online. The Bees Knee's is located in downtown Northville, and has very reasonable rates for DIY pottery. You can use a studio there for $8 an hour; grab a group rate for $4 an hour, or Fridays are ladies night, and all rates for studios are $8 for the whole night. Thursdays is also friends night, and you only pay one studio fee for yourself and a friend (essentially a 'buy one get one free' deal). You can book your pottery time online, as well, and the ceramic items you make/purchase aren't includes in these fees.

Ceramics By You offers classes in ceramics and glass, as well as children's or Girl Scouts/4H parties and glass parties. Classes are a great deal, as they cost $3.50 for a three-hour class, plus the cost of material. Classes meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (11 a.m.- 2 p.m., and 6 - 9 p.m.) as well as Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Week day classes are for adults only but Saturdays are open for children as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Starting in the fall and going through December, there are also Thursday classes during the same hours.
