Best Date Night Shows For Valentine's Day In Metro Detroit

When it's cold and miserable, with arctic blasts whipping through your every bone, it's great to know there is an oasis of warmth where you can snuggle with your sweetie and watch a great show. On February 14 and 15, The Redford Theatre presents the greatest love story of all time, "Casablanca." Admission to the film is totally free on these dates. This film has lots of interesting themes including espionage, corruption, war, forbidden love, desperation and exotic locales. Starring Hollywood icons Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, this love story never goes out of style.

February 14 is opening night for the Stagecrafters' main stage production of "Ain't Misbehavin'," a jazz revue of Harlem musician Fats Waller's signature tunes. Waller was so popular in his day that he was once kidnapped by Al Capone's henchmen and brought to the gangster's birthday party to perform as the special guest entertainer. Waller died at the young age of 39 in 1943 from alcohol abuse.

On February 15 at 7:30 p.m., the Michigan Philharmonic presents a salute to the 50s, with music from the silver screen, Broadway and black and white TV. Broadway shows featured are "The King and I," "Singing in the Rain" and "Pal Joey," the musical whence "My Funny Valentine" sprang. Selections also include hits by 50s icons like Nat King Cole, Gene Kelly, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

Kick off your Valentine's date night a week early by attending The Detroit Symphony's salute to Broadway on February 7, 8 and 9. Selections from "The Music Man," "Jersey Boys," "Phantom of the Opera" and "My Fair Lady" are presented. February 13-15 brings the romantic music of Sergei Rachmaninoff to the stage, with a featured selection, "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" made famous in the beloved film "Somewhere in Time."

Great fun for the entire family, the Detroit Princess Riverboat is a former floating casino that was abandoned by gambling moguls once laws permitting land-based casinos loosened up. The family that owns this showboat also owns the Michigan Princess in Lansing. The company runs cruises up the Detroit River and holds special dining events as passengers float by the festive lights of Windsor and the American river banks. Throughout the summer, the vessel runs romantic moonlight cruises which are an excellent way to crown an evening of love.
