Belle Isle Fountain Gets Makeover
[photogallerylink id=28712 align=left]Restoration is underway on Belle Isle as crews work to revitalize a star attraction.
"We saved what we could, but a lot of them were destroyed," one worker told WWJ's Vickie Thomas, as crews were tearing out all of the Pewabic tiles from the floor of the Belle Isle's Scott Fountain.
Restoration workers will put down a layer of cement to take the place of the tile.
Foreman Steve Vereeke said what was salvageable will be stored on the island. The city hopes to eventually use the tile elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the $1 million overhaul will continue.
"It was in a little worse condition than what they were originally expecting. That's why it's not done yet... We want to fix it, and we're going to fix it right," Vereeke said.
