Beaumont Launches Virtual Pregnancy Project

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Doctors at Beaumont Hospital have launched a new on-line project to education people about pregnancy.

Doctor Mike Genord of Esprit Women's Health explains they've created a virtual patient, "Lisa," who, together with her virtual husband, will spend the next 40 weeks of her pregnancy sharing her experiences.

"Through the web page and Facebook and Twitter, we're going to use her experiences and engage the audience to educate about pregnancy over the next forty weeks," Dr. Genord told WWJ's Jayne Bower.

"It's more interactive. And when we engage people in an interactive process, and a simulated patient, we believe patients can learn just like fireman can learn or doctors can learn or flight people learn in simulated cases," he said.

Dr. Genord says "Interactive You: A Virtual Pregnancy Project" will address everything from issues with trying to conceive, to miscarriage to Cesarean Section, to breast-feeding.

He says this takes learning beyond what you can get from a book.

"Reading a book is a great way to learn, but it's very much what someone wants to tell you. And, in this -- in social media -- we're trying to get the people to participate... Really, it's not me educating, it's everyone educating," Genord said.
