BBB Helps Secure ID From Thieves
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - There was an event in Southfield Saturday for those worried about identity theft. The Better Business Bureau's "Secure Your ID" event took place in the parking lot of their office.
They smashed the hard drives of computers and shredded up to three bags of documents for free.
Better Business Bureau CEO Melanie Duquesnel says this is important.
"It's a great way to secure your identity and especially when over 19 million people have been hit with identity fraud in the last two years, just two years," says Duquesnel.
She says that thieves have no problems going through your trash to find the identity information they need to reek havoc on your financial life.
Arther Phillips from Southfield stopped by to shred sensitive documents that he didn't want falling into the wrong hands.
"Papers from mortgages, canceled checks, and things of that sort...the prevalence of identity theft..I wanted to make sure my identity is secure, for sure," says Phillips.
They accepted used cell phones to give to needy seniors.
