Battle Over Detroit-Windsor Crossing Continues
LANSING (WWJ) - The debate is raging on in Lansing over whether a new crossing should be built between Detroit and Windsor.
WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports the war of words over the Ambassador Bridge is heating up between Michigan former governor Jim Blanchard - a DRIC project consultant - and former advisor to President Clinton Dick Morris - a spokesperson for the Ambassador Bridge. Skubick says both sides are accusing the other of being hired guns.
Blanchard contends Morris will say anything to stop the second span between Detroit and Windsor. "Dick Morris will say whatever his clients pay him to say. I think if he checked his clients he'd be a little more cautious," says Blanchard, who adds, "Anyone who cares about jobs or our economic future or trade, the busiest trade corridor in the world, supports a new international trade crossing."
Morris, however, points to polling data - which agrees with the point of view of Ambassador Bridge officials - that suggests that 60% of the people in Michigan want a bridge between Detroit and Windsor, but say it should be privately built. "I think that this bridge is an absolute disaster. This is the kind of project that years from now Michigan taxpayers will still be paying the bill for it," says Morris.
