Basement Flooding Means Big Business

CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - The phones have been ringing off the hook at companies that waterproof homes. Joe Safie of Water B Gone in Chesterfield Township said this is the busiest he's been in over five years.

"I got nine calls in the last two-and-a-half hours, and we are booked for the month of June with just appointments. It's unbelievable," Safie said.

Safie told WWJ's Sandra McNeil he's been getting a lot of calls from Grosse Pointe Woods, St. Clair Shores and Roseville.

"In a lot of cities that don't have adequate storm drains, systems are backing up... and a lot of homes that do not have sump pumps or backup systems are occurring with a lot of water in their basements," he said.

Safie said he has responded to about a thousand calls in the past month, and he is not complaining. "We are blessed by God, I say," Safie said.

Meantime, WWJ has been taking calls from all around Metro Detroit from homeowners with flooded basements.

"I just came from a house that we're actually renting in Warren and the basement is ankle-deep in water. And we're having difficulty finding a plumber to come out because they're so busy with all the other floods in the basements," one woman said.

A flood watch remains in effect through Thursday evening. Stay tuned to WWJ Newsradio 950 for the latest, during Traffic and Weather, every 10 minutes on the 8s.  - More on this story here -
