Bank Robbery Suspects Caught After Police Chase On I-94
HARRISON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- A pair of suspected bank robbers have been taken into custody on Monday after they nearly got away with stealing a large amount of money.
Macomb County Sheriff Tony Wickersham says the two suspects made their way into a Harrison Township Comerica Bank Monday morning just before 12 p..m. and fled the scene with an unknown amount of cash.
Once police caught up to the suspects, a chase ensued on I-94 and ended in Roseville at Little Mack. The driver jumped the median on I-94 in an attempt to flee the scene, but police were able to apprehend the man.
Lieutenant John Michalke said that eyewitnesses at the scene were able to provide authorities with an accurate description of the getaway vehicle.
"Our deputies were converging on the location in response to the alarm," Michalke said. "One of our deputies located the vehicle as it was getting on westbound I-94 at Metropolitan Parkway.
"[The chase] culminated in a crash with patrol vehicles on westbound I-94 just north of Little Mack," Michalke said. "One of the individuals was taken into custody immediately. The driver ran across westbound I-94, jumped the median wall, at which point one of our deputies ran him down and deployed a taser and got him in custody."
Money from the bank has been recovered, but an investigation is ongoing. The 25 and 27-year-old male suspects are expected to be arraigned Saturday.
"They were wearing what turned out to be security guard type uniforms, at least one of them brandished a handgun," Michalke said. "They ordered the people in the bank to lie on the floor. A large sum of money was given to them and they ran from the bank."
There were no reported injuries.
