Macomb County's Sandy Jurek wins CIO of the Year award: Sandy Jurek, Macomb County's chief information officer, has been on the job for only a year but that hasn't stopped her from being named one of the winners of the CIO of the Year Award by Crain's Detroit Business in this week's issue. Previously, the county's Department of Information Technology was without a director for nearly two years amid rapidly changing technology and increased demands placed on the various departments to keep up. Jurek executed a complete department reorganization in April of this year -- just two weeks prior to a building fire in the Old County Building that displaced her entire staff and disabled the county's communications and technology infrastructure, which had to be replaced and relocated. In addition, along with the County Executive Office, Jurek is preparing to release a new Technology Strategic Plan for the County that will provide a roadmap for improvements over the next two to five years. Beginning with a series of ongoing meetings with all department heads and elected officials, Jurek has embarked on a master planning process that will outline all major projects for each year. An intensive discovery project has also been underway, which will result in detailed inventories, processes and a single set of standards for all technology in the county. When completed, a report will be generated that illustrates potential cost savings and growth opportunities. Judged by a panel of CIOs and industry experts, the award is presented annually to technology executives across metro Detroit who display innovation in the use of technology strategy, leadership in the industry and a track record of going beyond the call of duty. Lakeside Software Wins Best of VMworld 2013 Gold Award: Bloomfield Hills-based Lakeside Software, a provider of IT analytics and business intelligence, announced that it has won the TechTarget Best of VMworld 2013 Gold Award in the Desktop Virtualization and End-User Computing category. SysTrack Resolve, a new operations management solution that accelerates desktop issue identification and resolution, was recognized at the VMworld 2013 conference held last week in San Francisco and sponsored by VMware Inc.
