Autopsy: Detroit Man Killed By Police Was Shot 5-6 Times
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A private autopsy report says an unarmed black man who was fatally shot by a suburban Detroit officer last year was shot five or six times.
The Detroit Free Press on Tuesday published details of the report, which offers new insight into the Dec. 23 shooting of 36-year-old Kevin Matthews by a Dearborn police officer.
The report says at least one shot was from "close range." The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office has said the Detroit man died of multiple gunshot wounds, but hasn't released additional details or the full report of the autopsy it conducted.
The shooting remains under investigation. An attorney for the family, Milton Greenman, says the private report was sent to prosecutors.
Matthews' mother, Valarie Johnson, has said he had mental and emotional problems.
According to police, Matthews — who was unarmed — struggled with the unidentified Dearborn officer following a foot chase from that city into a nearby Detroit backyard. Officials add Matthews was involved in an earlier larceny in Dearborn and was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant in Redford Township.
