Authorities: Wildfire Caused By Person
MENTOR TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a wildfire in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula that burned more than 1,400 acres and forced the evacuation of about 50 homes was caused by at least one person.
Investigators on Thursday found where the fire started but didn't know exactly how the flames began, WWTV/WWUP reported.
The fire in the area of the Huron National Forest was near Mack Lake in Oscoda County's Mentor Township. The U.S. Forest Service says it was fully contained by Thursday morning. There were no reports of injuries or structures being burned. An American Red Cross shelter was set up in the nearby community of Mio.
Officials say rain helped firefighting efforts.
The Oscoda County sheriff's department said the homes evacuated Wednesday included some small subdivisions and most were seasonal homes.
Some people evacuated from their homes Wednesday evening are still not being allowed back. The U.S. Forest Service said they will determine when people can return to their homes after reevaluating fire conditions.
