Authorities: Teacher Had Sex With Teen Boy, Gave Him A Gun
JACKSON, Mich. (AP/WWJ) - Authorities say a former Michigan teacher who is accused of having sex with a teenage student also gave him a gun that's believed to have been used in a Jackson shooting.
Jamee Hiatt of Grass Lake was arrested by Jackson police in January after resigning from her job as third-grade teacher at Woodworth Elementary School in Leslie, Michigan. Prior to that, she taught at Leslie Middle School as recently as 2013, according to the district's website.
The 31-year-old was charged with criminal sexual conduct.
Authorities say the charges stemmed from a sexual relationship with a boy that began in 2014, when he was 13 years old.
The alleged victim told police that Hiatt had sex with him "so many times that he couldn't begin to tell how many times that there were," Jackson Police Det. Gary Schuette testified. The boy, however, was able to recount five or six specific incidents, Schuette said, which took place at Hiatt's home in Grass Lake and on one occasion in a parking lot of a store in Jackson.
The Lansing State Journal reports Hiatt told police a gun belonging to her as stolen, but she's charged with filing a false report. Details of the shooting weren't released.
Defense lawyer Phillip Berkemeier said Hiatt "has a lot of things she regrets." He said she earlier said she was "forthcoming" about the gun.
It's not clear how police tied the weapon to the Jackson shooting.
