Audit Dings Mich. For Inspections Of Pumps, Scales
LANSING (AP) - State auditors say a Michigan agency can do a better job inspecting gas station pumps and other measuring devices to make sure consumers are getting what they pay for.
An audit released Wednesday flagged the state for not penalizing businesses enough for using inaccurate scales, meters and other devices. Businesses subject to inspection include gas stations, grocery stores and manufacturers.
The audit says the state didn't reinspect bad devices within the desired 35 days and didn't inspect a small percentage of gas stations within a recommended four-year time frame.
The state agrees with most of the audit's recommendations but contends it's adequately ensuring bad scales are fixed. State officials say they're less concerned about levying fines and more focused on making sure businesses spend money to fix the devices.
