Attorney Pleads Guilty, Smuggled Xanax Into Jail
PONTIAC (AP) - A suburban Detroit attorney who authorities say smuggled Xanax pills and chewing tobacco pouches into Oakland County Jail to her incarcerated fiance has pleaded guilty in the case.
The Detroit News reports Nina Backon of Farmington Hills pleaded guilty this week to contraband and drug possession charges. She is free on bond ahead of an April 27 sentencing.
Defense lawyer Neil Rockind says he hopes the judge considers probation for Backon.
Sheriff's officials say Backon came to the jail last May to visit 23-year-old Eric Wilamowski, serving a 93-day sentence for possession of drug paraphernalia. Suspicious deputies searched Wilamowski and found six pills and 10 chewing tobacco pouches. Backon had claimed to be his attorney.
In December, Wilamowski pleaded guilty to having contraband in the jail.
