AT&T Expands Mobile Internet Capacity In Northern Michigan
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Customers in northern Michigan are expected to experience improved mobile Internet coverage and voice performance as a result of continued investment by AT&T.
The company said Friday it had completed an upgrade to enhance the wireless capacity and performance of its mobile Internet network throughout West Branch and Oscoda on the Lake Huron shore, Cedarville and the surrounding area in the eastern Upper Peninsula and along M-26 in the Keweenaw area of the western Upper Peninsula.
The network enhancement adds new layers of frequency, also known as "carriers," to seven cell sites throughout the counties of Iosco, Ogemaw, Crawford and Roscommon counties in northern lower Michigan and Mackinac and Houghton counties in the Upper Peninsula. The new layers more efficiently manage available spectrum and increase mobile broadband capacity.
"In Northern Michigan, we're always looking for new opportunities to provide an enhanced customer experience, and our investment in the local wireless network is just one way we're accomplishing that," said Jim Murray, president, AT&T. "We're working to build a 4G network that's smarter and better to provide our customers with a superior mobile Internet experience."
Besides its mobile phone network, AT&T also operates the nation's largest Wi-Fi network, including more than 32,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers, and provides access to more than 461,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn't count against customers' monthly wireless data plans.
From 2007 to 2012, AT&T invested more than $116 billion into its wireless and wireline networks across the country. Since 2007, AT&T has invested more capital into the U.S. economy than any other public company. In a September 2013 report, the Progressive Policy Institute ranked AT&T No. 1 on its list of U.S. "Investment Heroes."
