Arts, Entertainment & Recreation Jobs In Detroit Increased 8.4% Year Over Year

Detroit's longtime commitment to the arts, entertainment and recreation industry is apparent with the multitude of options it has available for its residents and visitors to the area. Entertainment complexes, museums, theaters, sporting events and casinos can be found throughout the city. The expanding number of concerts fill local venues to capacity while first-class cultural attractions and festivals draw in the area residents, the surrounding communities and tourists alike.

The arts, entertainment and recreation industry in Detroit and the surrounding areas of Livonia and Warren is growing at a steady rate. According to the latest data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB), the arts, entertainment and recreation industry is experiencing growth in the urban area of Detroit and metropolitan areas including Livonia and Warren. Jobs that fall within this field rose 8.43 percent from June of 2012 to June of 2013, adding 2,100 positions in that timeframe.

According to additional statistics released by the DTMB, employment in this field continued to rise 9.76 percent since the previous month, in addition to the already strong growth this industry saw in May.

Sub-sectors that encompass the arts, entertainment and recreation category include sports and theatre, museums and historical institutions as well as amusement and gambling. Occupations within this field cover a large expanse of positions that fall under 23 broad careers, with the number of specific job titles that fall under this category reaching just under 550, as published by the Bureau of Employment Statistics.

Examples of groups of workers within this industry are architects and engineers, designers, those involved in the media and sports as well as those in the food service industry. Also included within this industry are curators, artists, librarians, entertainment managers, agents and accountants.

The employment outlook is increasingly favorable due to the influx of young professionals who now call Detroit home. Arriving from across the United States, and around the globe, these creative entrepreneurs have been opening small businesses including design firms, galleries and more, adding to the growing numbers of employment opportunities available in this industry.
