Art And Recovery Connect With Art From The Heart
DETROIT (WWJ) - Metro Detroit stroke survivors get some valuable therapy and give back at the same time, by creating some very special "Art from the Heart."
This week, the American Heart Association of Southeast Michigan hosted a series of special painting parties at long-term care facility Samaritan Manor in Detroit. Residents got to create one-of-kind heart masterpieces, combining therapy and philanthropy.
News Radio 950's Health Reporter Sean Lee reports that when it comes to recovering from a stroke, physical therapy may not be the only thing the doctor ordered.

L.T. West said he enjoyed painting before his stroke and says he's grateful that painting has been part of his recovery:
"Art always gave me a good state of mind," said West. "Always kept me going, you know everybody looks at art differently, I can't see what you see, but if a person look at it and gets something out of it, good or bad, hope it's good."
West said creating art keeps him motivated and working toward recovery. "It's therapy too, and I enjoy it. I really do."
Copies of those masterpieces go on display May 3 at Detroit's annual Heart Walk, and the originals go up for sale at the Heart Ball June 3rd.
