Arrest Made In Rape Of Elderly Woman
ROMULUS (WWJ) - A suspect had been arrested in the rape of a 72-year-old Romulus woman last week.
Deputy Police Chief John Leacher said the suspect forced his way into the woman's home and attacked.
"She actually had gone outside and was coming back inside, and I believe that he followed her inside before she could get in and get the doors locked," said Leacher.
Leacher said a tip, along with the work of a federal, state and local task force, led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man.
"The ones that would seem to be, you know, defenseless, those are the ones that are more ... I guess, shocking to the senses ... We dedicated every resource we had in finding the perpetrator," he said, "but it couldn't have happened without someone coming forward."
Leacher said the victim is doing well.
"I personally delivered the news that we had her perpetrator in custody, and she was completely overwhelmed, but just very strong-willed, a very strong-willed woman," Leacher said.
Leacher expects the suspect to be charged within the next couple of days. His name will be released at that time.
