Arrest Made In Church Guard Death; 1 Suspect Still At Large
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit Police have arrested one suspect and are seeking a second in the shooting death of an 84-year-old security guard in the parking lot of a Detroit church while Bible study took place inside.
One person is in custody but has not been formally charged yet, Sgt. Alan Quinn told The Detroit Free Press.
Police say Joseph Lewis was working at Victory Way Assembly Church of God in Christ on May 9 when he was killed. Two men reportedly approached Lewis in the church parking lot on Tireman, between Livernois and I-96. That's when investigators say a struggle ensued and one of the attackers fired shots, hitting Lewis.
Lewis was armed but his gun was found in his holster.
Lewis's son Anthony says his father was a Korean War veteran and worked 55 years as a guard at various Detroit churches.
Deacon Jimmy Jones said the church hired security about three years ago due to concerns about crime.
Information about the suspect being sought by police was not immediately available.
