Armed Standoff In Westland Kroger Parking Lot
WESTLAND (WWJ) - Westland Police said no one was hurt during an hour-long armed standoff Friday in a shopping center parking lot.
WWJ Newsradio 950 received several calls from listeners who witnessed the police situation unfolding outside the Kroger store on Merriman and Michigan Avenue.
Alex, who works at the BP gas station across the street from the location, told WWJ's Marie Osborne that police were not letting anyone in or out of the area.
"They have us locked down, and they have all the exits to the parking lot blocked off. They have police all around the parking lot with guns," he said.
It was a scary time for Kroger shoppers who told WWJ's Beth Fisher they were asked to stay away from the windows and were not allowed to leave the store.
"I was just paying for my stuff and after I put everything on the conveyor belt I look up and I just see a police car with an officer on the hood with a gun," said Lisa Ventures of Wayne.
"I just looked at the cashier going why are you ringing people up. She said we're in lockdown .... everybody had their version of what was going on," she said.
Police confirmed that there was a man in a vehicle with a gun, but did not immediately release any further details about the incident.
The suspect was transported in an EMS vehicle and his blue SUV was towed from the scene.
Traffic was blocked off eastbound on Michigan Ave., but the road has since reopened in all directions.
