Armed Robber Assaults Family Dollar Employee, Takes Off With Money

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police in Detroit are on a search for a suspect after a Family Dollar store was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday morning.

The store -- on E. State Fair Ave. and Riopelle St. on the city's east side -- was robbed at around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, police say. An armed suspect approached a female employee as she was opening the store, entered the store behind her and robbed her at gunpoint.

The suspect then struck the victim in the head with the handgun and fled the area. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.

Police say the suspect is a black male, 5-foot-7 and 250 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or knows of his whereabouts is asked to call the Detroit Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
