Apt. Building Fire Leaves Dozens Homeless
CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - A massive fire at a Chesterfield Township apartment building has left more than three dozen residents homeless.
The fire was reported around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Georgetown Apartments, near 23 Mile Road and I-94. WWJ's Mike Campbell reports a resident says she came home from work, turned on the air conditioner and heard a "pop" and then saw smoke and flames. By the time she ran down to get the fire extinguisher, she says, the flames were so bad she couldn't get into her apt., so she started banging on neighbors' doors, telling them to get out. By the time the fire department arrived, flames were through the roof.
The Red Cross is helping the displaced families with temporary housing. Police say they have no reports of injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
