Ann Arbor's David S. Goyer Makes History With Superb 'Man Of Steel'
HOLLYWOOD (WWJ) - David S. Goyer has done it again. Goyer is the screenwriter behind the latest Superman movie, "Man of Steel," starring Henry Cavill in the title role. Goyer also collaborated with award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan (Man of Steel Producer/Story) on the Batman trilogy, and with his latest project, "Man of Steel," Goyer becomes the only person to write films about both Batman and Superman.
"Man of Steel" embodies the familiar elements that fans of the Superman character - and story - know, love and expect. In this particular film, Clark Kent (Kal-El on Krypton) is struggling with a number of issues, including: wondering why he has powers that other people on Earth don't have; how to keep his powers hidden from the public as his dad on Earth, Jonathan Kent, has requested; and, ultimately, what to do when he has to choose between Earth and Krypton. Those are tough decisions, to say the least.
What I liked about "Man of Steel" is that although it's about one of the most beloved cartoon characters of all time, it isn't a remake of another Superman film. It's a fresh take on a familiar story; something Nolan says is exactly what they were aiming to do.
"Audiences will be very familiar with 'Man of Steel's' portrayal of Superman as the ultimate superhero, but where he was an impenetrable, god-like figure in previous iterations of his story, we show him as a rather more relatable figure who deals with very human issues of love, divided loyalties and family, even as he is anything but human himself," Nolan said.
With 'Man of Steel," the entire team behind the project developed a film that will not only appeal to Superman aficionados, but also to people who may be new to the story. This film is action-packed; it has excitement; spectacular special effects; amazing stunts; and the acting is superb. Cavill – with his chiseled good looks – is perfect as the 'Man of Steel'; Amy Adams nails her role as Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lois Lane; and Michael Shannon is absolutely magnificent as the laser-focused General Zod.
Grab a big tub of popcorn, an ice cold drink, one of those over-sized boxes of candy and I'll see you at the movies!
