Ann Arbor Resident Up For 5 Grammy Awards
Move over Eminem -- there's another Michigander who could walk home with an armful of Grammy's this year. An Ann Arbor man is up for five awards.
A very modest Michael Daugherty's reaction to receiving not one, but five, Grammy nominations: "Well, it's a great honor and I have a surprise, you know. I think one would be just fine for me," Daugherty told WWJ's Jayne Bower.
Four nominations for his symphony called "Metropolis," the contemporary classical saga of Superman. And another nomination for:
"It's a piano concerto ... and it's about trains. When I was a kid growing up in Iowa, late at night, I would hear the trains whistle by or rumble through the town. I've always liked the sound of trains. And if you think about a piano keyboard, it's kind of like a train track," Daugherty said.
Michael Daugherty says he is always composing. "Whatever I'm doing, whether I'm driving a car, whether I'm shopping, whether I'm doing gardening or whatever ... I'm always hearing music."
His latest is a composition for the University of Michigan symphony band.
The Grammy Awards will be handed out on February 13, 2011. You can watch the program on WWJ-TV, starting at 8:00 p.m.
