Ann Arbor Board Wants Legislation To Ban Guns From Schools
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education is asking state lawmakers to consider legislation to make schools gun-free zones.
The board on Wednesday passed a resolution asking for the change amid a debate about whether it's appropriate to openly carry firearms in schools. A Michigan resident who has a concealed pistol license may legally openly carry a gun into a school.
The Ann Arbor News reports about 200 people attended the meeting at Huron High School, including about 25 people openly carrying handguns.
Last week, 22-year-old Joshua Wade openly carried a pistol into Pioneer High School during a choir concert. Police were called and, following the concert, a musician told the audience about the gun. Wade was at Wednesday's meeting with a gun on his hip.
