Amtrak Service Fully Resumes After Accident
LEONI TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Amtrak says full passenger service has been restored between Detroit and Chicago, one day after one of its trains slammed into a truck that was stuck on the tracks in southern Michigan.
The accident happened just aftr 8 a.m. Wednesdya in Jackson County's Leoni Township, 45 miles south of Lansing. Authorities said 10 people sustained injuries, but non were life-threatening.
Amtrak was providing alternative transportation Wednesday for passengers between Ann Arbor and Jackson so they could board other trains.
Many passengers were asleep Wednesday when an Amtrak train collided with a semi trailer and derailed on its way from Pontiac to Chicago.
Amtrak officials said in a statement that the collision caused the engine to come to rest on its side and the first two cars of the train to lose contact with the rails.
At the time of the incident there were 68 passengers and five crew members aboard the train, which consisted of two locomotives and six railcars/
Police said it did not seem the truck driver was at fault and no charges were expected.
