Amid Oil Cleanup, River Reopening Uncertain
MARSHALL (AP) - Officials say they don't know when the Kalamazoo River in southwestern Michigan will reopen for public use as the cleanup of last summer's oil spill continues.
Jim Rutherford, Calhoun County Public Health Department health officer, tells the Battle Creek Enquirer that Calhoun County parks such as Historic Bridge Park probably will open this spring. He says other sections of river could be opened later but there's no specific timeline for that happening.
Local, state and federal officials have been working with pipeline owner Enbridge Inc. to clean up after the July spill of more than 800,000 gallons near Marshall. Enbridge says officials have isolated sections of the river that have problems with submerged oil, and are looking for more problem areas.
The pipeline runs from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario.
