Amber Alert Cancelled; Police Say 2-Year-Old Found Safe
AUGUSTA TWP. (WWJ) - Police say the 2-year-old boy who was the subject of an Amber Alert has been found safe.
Michigan State Police Lt. Michael McCormick said little Jarren Jackson was found nearly 12 hours after an Amber Alert was issued.
McCormick said troopers were earlier dispatched to Whittaker Road, south of Judd Road, in Washtenaw County's Augusta Township around 1:15 a.m. Saturday on a report of a child abduction.
When troopers arrived on the scene, a woman told them she was driving with her three young children when her car broke down on the side of the road. She said an older white male stopped and offered to assist her, but she declined his help. The woman she never expected what the man would do next.
"She reported to us that this individual then opened up the rear passenger door of the vehicle and removed her 2-year-old son and had left the area with that child," McCormick said.
The man reportedly sped away from the area, traveling northbound on Whittaker Road, leaving the woman in a panic. Police immediately started searching for the suspect's vehicle, described by the woman as an older model, small, red pickup truck with black lines on the back and some rust.
McCormick said family members eventually located Jarren, safe and sound, approximately two miles away from where he was abducted. He was taken to C.S. Motts Children's Hospital for observation.
"Right now we do have investigators that are trying to ascertain the particulars surrounding the circumstances as to how the child came to be at that location at the first place, and we do not know that information as of now," McCormick said, adding that police are still actively searching for the suspect.
"We would welcome any information from the public that would help us ascertain either the identity of that vehicle and/or, of course, the individual who was operating it," he said.
The suspect is described as a white male, about 5'10" tall, possibly wearing a camouflage coat.
