Amber Alert Canceled For 16-Month-Old Boy Taken During Carjacking; Suspect In Custody

ROMULUS (WWJ) - Police say an Amber Alert for a 16-month-old boy who was reportedly taken during a carjacking has been called off.

Romulus police tell WWJ that the alert was called off Saturday around 8 a.m. after Ayden Casteels was located. Officials declined to release other details.

Authorities had issued the alert earlier Saturday, saying Ayden was taken from the Howard Johnson hotel on Flynn Road, near Merriman Road, around 2:30 a.m. during a carjacking. According to reports, an unknown black man carjacked the vehicle and drove off with Ayden in the car.

According to police, a citizen called 911 after spotting the suspect -- described as a black male about 6' tall and 160 pounds, wearing a jogging suit. Police located the suspect walking in the area of Merriman Road and Michigan Avenue in Westland, and took him into custody.

Ayden was found sleeping in the backseat of his family's vehicle, which was located nearby on Licorice Street.

It's unclear what charges the 22-year-old suspect might be facing. He's currently being held at the Romulus Police Department.

Police say investigators are still trying to figure out a motive and "who else may have been involved."

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 734-941-8400.
