Ambassador Bridge President Released From Custody
The president of the company that operates the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Canada has been released from custody after being cited for contempt in a lawsuit filed by state transportation officials.
WWJ's Jeff Defran reports Dan Stamper released a statement afterwards saying: "MDOT bureaucrats are doing everything they can to stop our successful 80-year-old private sector business from building our new bridge with our own money. They will lose. End quote."
Wayne County Circuit Judge Prentis Edwards earlier had Stamper handcuffed and taken to a holding cell.
Edwards says the company failed to begin demolition of fuel pumps and toll booths as part of a road project with the state. He ruled they were illegally built and also ordered the bridge company to rebuild a ramp.
The Ambassador Bridge is owned by billionaire Manuel ``Matty'' Moroun who is seeking to build a second span across the river.
The now-free Stamper says the company won't stop in its efforts to build a new bridge.
