Allen Park Firefighters Help Deliver Baby On Freeway
ALLEN PARK (WWJ) - A special delivery for four Allen Park firefighters, as they help deliver a baby boy in a construction zone at the foot of the Southfield Freeway.
It happened Tuesday around 8:00 am, just north of the City Hall building. Engineer Ed Cann, along with paramedics Rob Epperson, Richard Hamilton and Mike Stetz, rushed to help a pregnant woman and her husband who were trying to get to the hospital, but the baby had other ideas. Cann said there was no time to spare.
"As soon as we arrived, the police were on scene and the woman was in obvious labor and obvious distress and the husband and wife were very excited. Within one minute, we had a beautiful baby boy in our hands."
Although it may be a rare occurrence, Cann said situations like this are covered in the training manual.
"We're trained for this sort of thing and we get a lot of pregnancy calls or auto crashes with pregnant women, but rarely does this happen and when it does, rarely does it happen this quickly."
Cann said mom and baby are fine, although the parents were suprised because they had been expecting to give birth to a girl.
This delivery was the third child and second birth, first was a set of twins, the Allen Park Fire Department has delivered in their history.
