Agents Seize 156 Pounds Of Marijuana At Ambassador Bridge
DETROIT (WWJ) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agents in Detroit say they found 156 pounds of marijuana hidden in a frozen vegetable shipment from Canada.
After crossing the Ambassador Bridge from Windsor, Ontario last Friday, a 62-year old Canadian man arrived at the Fort Street Cargo facility in Detroit with a shipment manifested as frozen vegetables, destined for Chicago.
Authorities say the shipment was referred for a "routine enforcement check," including an X-ray scan which came back inconclusive.
After the X-ray scan, officers visually examined the shipment of 29 pallets and discovered 134 packages of marijuana mixed within the shipment of vegetables. The marijuana has an estimated street value of about $626,000.
"This is a very significant marijuana seizure. Extreme lengths were used in an attempt to conceal this shipment," said John Nowak, Acting CBP Detroit Port Director, said in a statement. "I commend the CBP officers involved in making this seizure and stopping this shipment of drugs from reaching our streets."
The driver was arrested and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The commercial truck and marijuana were seized.
Information on the driver's identity was not immediately available.
