AG Vows To Fight Asian Carp
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette says he'll continue the legal fight to stop the destructive Asian Carp from entering the Great Lakes, a court battle that started with his predecessor.
Schuette tells WWJ Newsradio 950 that the threat is very real and can not be overstated. The Attorney General cited a recent report showing evidence of Asian Carp DNA in a channel located past one of the electrical barrriers, indicating that the migration is moving closer to Michigan. He says an invasion of Asian Carp would be an ecological and economic disaster to 20-percent of the world's fresh water supply and a 7-billion dollar fishing industry.
Michigan and 5 other states are part of a suit seeking to close shipping locks around Chicago. They also want a permanent barrier to stop migration from the Mississippi river to the Great Lakes.
