Advisory Issued After Sewage Overflow Near Ann Arbor Park
ANN ARBOR (WWJ/AP) - Ann Arbor has issued a public advisory after an estimated 36,000 gallons of sewage overflowed near Bird Hills Nature Area.
The city is recommending that park visitors this week stay on pathways and keep dogs on leashes, The Ann Arbor News reported. Sewage flowed over land into a tributary of the Huron River before the source was discovered Monday.
The city received a report of sewage odor in the woods near Bird Hills Nature Area, near Newport Road and M-14, on Friday night. Crews investigated over the weekend before finding the overflow coming from a manhole. Officials say roots had grown through a sewer pipe, blocking flow.
Officials say the area will be treated with white powder lime. They say they don't believe there are health risks along the river due to dilution.
The city says it's been in contact with the city's water quality manager to understand impacts on the park and collaborate for an environmentally sensitive cleanup effort, and that the EPA has been notified.
