Advanced Photonix Gets World's First UL Certification For Terahertz System

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) -- The Ann Arbor optical and electronic equipment developer Advanced Photonix (NYSE: API) said it had received the world's first full certification from Underwriters Laboratory to use the UL Listing Mark for the T-Gauge terahertz frequency generation system.

Terahertz radiation occupies a spot on the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and infrared light. Little understood and hard to generate before the 1990s, "T-rays" are now being eyed for a variety of testing and security applications. Among their most interesting properties -- they "see through" many materials without packing the damaging, ionizing punch of X-rays.

Advanced Photonix's T-Gauge system can be used in industrial settings for online process and quality control. The system is capable of measuring physical properties of products such as multi-layer thickness, basis weight, moisture content, subsurface defect detection, delamination detection.

"This is a major milestone for API and our customers," said API CEO Richard Kurtz. "With the UL Mark we are raising the bar on industrial terahertz systems to a new level. This instills confidence in the durability, reliability and safety of our T-Gauge system. Our CE approval is still pending, but we expect to receive that approval before the end of this calendar year. We look forward to greater acceptance of our nondestructive quality control systems through the strength of our UL certification."

Advanced Photonix has three product lines: Optosolutions focuses on enabling manufacturers to measure physical properties, including temperature, particular counting, color, and fluorescence for medical, homeland security and process control applications. The Terahertz sensor product line is targeted to the process control, to enable quality control, and security markets through nondestructive testing. High-Speed Optical Receiver products are used by the telecommunication market in both telecommunication equipment and in test and measurement equipment utilized in the manufacturing of telecommunication equipment.
