Acid Spill Closes M-14 Following Rollover
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Westbound M-14 remained closed west of the US 23/M-14 interchange due to an acid spill for most of the day Friday.
Michigan State Police say a semi flatbed truck carrying a train car full of benzene dicarboxylic acid rolled over Thursday morning, leaving the liquid leaking onto the freeway.
Police said the truck driver was injured and was taken to University of Michigan hospital for treatment of fractures to his shoulder and ankle. His name has not been released.
There were no other vehicles involved and no other injuries reported as a result of the accident.
Police said it was expected to take 5 hours or more for a Washtenaw County HAZMAT crew to clean up to spill and for a wrecker to remove the truck.
Officials said benzene dicarboxylic acid does not pose a danger to any residents in the area. It is used in the manufacture of food and beverage plastics, dyes, perfumes and medicines. Sand trucks were being used to absorb the material.
The accident is under investigation. Motorists were asked to avoid the area which reopened just before midnight.
