RED WINGS MOURN LYNCH: Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch described Budd Lynch as a "legendary icon" in Detroit after the veteran broadcaster died on Tuesday. He was 95. Lynch spent 63 years working for the Red Wings as both a TV and radio broadcaster. He later served as the team's director publicity and the public address announcer at Joe Louis Arena.
PLAYER/COACH: Columbus Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger is turning his attention to coaching during the lockout. The seven-year NHL veteran has agreed to become a volunteer assistant at Ohio State, his alma mater, under head coach Mark Osiecki.
ON THIS DAY LAST YEAR: The Montreal Canadiens spoiled the celebration in Winnipeg, with a 5-1 win over the Jets in their first regular-season game back in the Manitoba city in 15 years. The team, which relocated from Atlanta, was greeted by an amped-up crowd and rousing rendition of O Canada. And even NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was made welcome after Winnipegers had blamed him for allowing the Jets to relocate to Phoenix in the 1990s.
