90-Year-Old Man Gets Probation In Parking Lot Death
ADRIAN (WWJ/AP) - An Adrian man has been sentenced to probation and ordered to stop driving after the death of a woman who became trapped between vehicles in a parking lot.
John Ellis was sentenced on Monday, his 90th birthday. Ellis earlier pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor of moving violation causing death.
Fifty-nine-year-old Linda Guzman died in February after being pinned in Lenawee County's Madison Township. Police say Ellis backed his van out of a space and hit a pickup truck, trapping Guzman.
According to investigators, Ellis hit the accelerator when he intended to brake. Defense lawyer Grace Garno said Ellis feels terrible about the death.
Guzman's sister LaVerne Guzman called the sentence fair, saying her family wanted Ellis off the road, not behind bars.
In addition to two years of probation, Ellis was ordered to pay a $1,725 in fines and court costs.
