87-Year-Old Man Dies While Ice Fishing Up North
IRON RIVER, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say the body of an 87-year-old man who failed to return from ice fishing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has been found.
According to reports, Albert John Melchiori of Iron River hadn't been heard from since he went fishing Monday evening at Chicagon Lake in Iron County. Family members reported him missing on Tuesday.
Sheriff Mark Valesano said investigators found Melchiori's truck parked along the shoreline at a camp from which he accessed an ice fishing shack by an off-road vehicle.
A Coast Guard helicopter on Wednesday spotted Melchiori's ORV, which had fallen through the ice, and his body was nearby. The location was about a quarter-mile from where his truck was found.
Valesano said officials believe Melchiori became disoriented due to heavy fog and drove his ORV onto unsafe ice along the shoreline.
Melchiori's cause of death was not immediately released.
