GALLERY: 80K Lights Brighten Home, Spirits In Royal Oak
ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - A local couple will soon flip the switch on an estimated 80,000 Christmas lights at their Royal Oak home.
Ethelyn Unger and her husband have been putting up the display for the past 33 years at their home on Washington at 12 Mile Road. They now have over 400 pieces -- so much that Unger says it takes her eight grown children a month to put it all up. See a photo gallery of their house here.
"I have one son that's an electrition and he's come through and put electricity all ... we have boxes all the way down the yard," Unger told WWJ's Sandra McNeil.
People come from all over each night to see the lights, some of them visitors from Europe. Unger said it just makes her happy.
"Well, we went through a period when there was a lot of sadness and recession and everything else, and it perks people up," she said. "It says, 'Oh my God, people still care. So, that's why we do it.' "
