6-Year-Old Boy Shot On Detroit's East Side, Police Questioning Parents
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating after a 6-year-old boy showed up at a hospital on the city's east side with a gunshot wound.
Police say the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the boy's home on Algonac Street, in a neighborhood near 7 Mile Road and Outer Drive.
Officers were called to a nearby hospital after the boy showed up at the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the wrist. The boy was earlier reported in serious condition, but is expected to recover.
Investigators are questioning the parents and are trying to determine if the boy was handling the gun at the time or if another person pulled the trigger.
It is the second time in three days a child has been injured by gunfire in Detroit.
Earlier this week, a 4-year-old Detroit boy shot himself in the thigh with a .40-caliber gun after his mother, 30-year-old Latasha Lum, fell asleep. Lum allegedly told police she fell asleep with the gun in a holster strapped to her, and was awakened by a gunshot. The child is expected to recover from his injuries. Lum is facing a charged of second-degree child abuse. She's due back in court Nov. 10.
