6-Year-Old Boy Critically Hurt In Hit-And-Run
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 6-year-old Detroit boy is hospitalized in critical condition after he was hit by a car while walking to a bus stop.
Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Wood said the boy's mother sent him off with two of his friends Wednesday morning. He crossed in the middle of the road, at St. Clair and East Warren, and was struck by a vehicle at around 7 a.m.
Police say the driver, described as a black female with blonde hair, fled the scene and was last seen heading westbound on Warren.
Detroit resident Ebony Richardson witnessed the accident.
"It's still dark. We don't have streetlights, so you don't see anything really at this corner very good," she said. "It looked like a lady jumped out [of the car] screaming; and once she realized the baby was unconscious she got in and just took off."
Richardson said there are a lot of children in this neighborhood and they are supervised as they walk to the bus stop each day.
"... We have abandoned houses and different things going on in the neighborhood, so, I try to keep an eye out on the children in the morning," Richardson said. "I also have two little ones, so it could've easily been my children."
The boy, identified as DeShaun White, was rushed to Children's Hospital. DeShaun's family members said he was not moving and barely breathing.
Wednesday afternoon, Detroit police were still searching for the vehicle — described a newer model, a small silver or gray sedan; possibly a hatchback, with a sunroof. The car may have front-end damage.
