6 People Carjacked Over 8 Hour Span In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say they're making progress in cracking down on carjackings across the city, despite the fact that six people were carjacked over an eight-hour span earlier this week.

Chief James Craig says the number of carjackings is actually down 33 percent compared to last year, but more can be done.

"I'm calling a meeting together of our business owners, party stores, liquor stores, gas stations where those have been locations where carjackings have originated," he said.

"I've talked to too many citizens here who say they're troubled by the loitering. Some times, the crime is taking place in front of these business places. These are magnets for potential carjackings, so we're going to be working on that," Craig added.

Despite the decrease in carjackings, Craig said unfortunately, they still occur daily throughout the city. In fact, between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, at least six people were victimized by carjackers.

"I think the one most troubling is the female that was shot in an attempted carjacking, so our work is still cut out. But again, here today we see a decline in carjackings compared to last year," he said.
