GVSU To Host Green Chemistry Conference: Grand Valley State University will host the annual Michigan Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference, organized in part by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Attendees will learn how green chemistry and engineering helps businesses and protects human health and the environment. Anyone interested in Michigan's sustainable growth is invited, including educators, students, entrepreneurs, policy makers, engineers and chemists. The Michigan Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference, titled "Designing a Sustainable Michigan," will be held Oct. 23 and 24 at the Eberhard Center on Grand Valley's Pew Campus in downtown Grand Rapids. The registration fee is $100; the student fee is $25. Highlights of the conference include more than 15 breakout sessions and speakers, a poster session and student poster contest, exhibitors and resume reviews, a 101 Green Chemistry and Engineering Workshop. and an American Chemical Society Career Workshop. Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas will introduce the keynote speaker, Terry Collins, professor of green chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University. DEQ Director Dan Wyant will present awards at the Governor's Award Ceremony and Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell will welcome attendees to the event. Macomb-OU INCubator Sets Capital Raise Meetup: The Macomb-OU INCubator will host its final capital raise meetup of 2013 on Nov. 5 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the incubator, 6633 18 Mile Road in Sterling Heights. If you're running a startup or early-stage growth-based business looking for funding, come meet and listen to capital expert, Mike Brennan. He will detail the various capital sources in Michigan, and talk about how to properly position your company to be qualified for private funding, including private equity, the angel network and venture capital, and/or public funding, including grants, pre-seed, micro-loans and venture match. Brennan will provide a group presentation, as well as individually help each present company to determine their needs. Henry Ford Community College hosts "College is Possible" seminar Oct. 22: Henry Ford Community College will host a "College is Possible" seminar on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Ghafari Room of the Technology Building, which is located on the main campus. The seminar will explain what steps students must take to properly enroll at HFCC and what programs and services are available once enrolled. Speakers from financial aid, counseling, child care and other HFCC departments will present information and answer any questions. This seminar is free and open to the public. Ignite UX Michigan is Next Week: The Michigan Usability Professionals Association is a partner in Ignite UX Michigan, an event Thursday, Oct. 24 in Ann Arbor that will feature 16 speakers giving short talks on a variety of user experience-themed topics including usability, accessibility, information architecture, analytics and interaction design.
