$5,000 Reward Offered For Info In 'Calculated Arson' At Oakland County Golf Course
OAKLAND TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities are offering a hefty cash reward for information leading to those responsible for setting a fire at a golf course in northern Oakland County that caused as much as $1 million in damages.
Fire crews from seven different departments responded to the blaze around 3 a.m. Friday at the Myth Golf and Banquet Center on Stoney Creek Road in Oakland Charter Township. According to the sheriff's office, three separate fires were set on the property.
The first fire was to an area where 31 golf carts were parked outside -- all of which were destroyed. The second fire was to a single golf cart, driven into a pond in the middle of the course. That cart was also destroyed.
The third fire was set in a large pole barn, which housed about 25 golf carts, as well as lawn maintenance equipment and several 55 gallon drums containing flammable materials, fertilizer, gasoline and oil. One of those drums exploded, further complicating firefighting efforts.
In all, approximately 100 golf carts were either damaged or destroyed in the incident. Authorities estimate total damages around $1 million.
Police believe two people are involved in what they called "calculated arson." The gender, race and age of the suspects are unknown at this time. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for tips that lead to the arrest and/or conviction of the suspects.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Oakland County Sheriff's Office tip line at 888-TURN-1-IN or the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee at 800-44-ARSON.
