5 Men Honored For Rescuing 2 Girls From Lake Michigan
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) - Five men who rescued two girls caught in an apparent rip current on Lake Michigan have been honored by the U.S. Coast Guard and public officials.
The Muskegon Chronicle reports the men were recognized Wednesday during a short ceremony in Grand Haven. They're credited with saving the lives of the teens struggling in the water Aug. 20 off Grand Haven State Park.
Coast Guard Senior Chief Justin Olson describes Zebulon Boeskool, Doug Jedele, Trevor Reeths, William Gramprie and Darryl Vansledright as "men of action." Olson adds "they placed complete strangers' lives above themselves."
Boeskool, a surfer, rescued Jozalin Francis. He says he "just did what he thought was right."
Jozalin attended the ceremony. She says the last thing she remembers is fighting waves, and the experience has changed her.
