4-Year-Old Girl Taken From Mom After Siblings Die In Fire
KALAMAZOO (WWJ/AP) - A court has removed a 4-year-old girl from the custody of a mother who left her home alone with three younger siblings who died when a fire swept through their low-income apartment in Kalamazoo.
A Kalamazoo County family court referee granted the Michigan Department of Human Services request to remove Drayanna O'Day from the custody of her mother, Jonetta Woods -- who is allowed supervised visits. Another hearing is set March 19.
The request was granted just days after 3-year-old twins Tevin and Ty'nitha Williams and their 1-year-old sister Tyonna Henderson were killed in Monday's fire at their home in the Interfaith Apartment Complex.
The Department of Human Services said Woods and a man identified as Fred Glespie were responsible for the four children, but had left them home alone.
The state agency says Woods also left Drayanna home alone in 2009, when she was just 1-year-old. Child Protective Services were made aware of the incident, but no formal action was taken against Woods.
