Protesters Greet Visiting HHS' Secretary Sebelius
DETROIT (WWJ) - U.S Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius was met by protesters Wednesday outside of the Covenant Community Care facility in southwest Detroit.
The group is speaking out against a health department mandate that requires for religious employers to cover certain services, including abortion-inducing drugs and contraception.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting spoke with Monica Miller of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society which organized the demonstration.
"We're not protesting the community care center, we're not even protesting Obamacare," said Miller. "We're protesting what is says on this sign: the Health and Human Services mandate that is an intrusion into the affairs of religious instutions and the way that they practice their ministry.
"It's wrong, it's unjust. We believe it's unconstitutional," she said.
Sebelius is in town to announce more than $128 million dollars in Affordable Care Act grants to local health care centers.
